About Pneumococcal Vaccine Research
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a bacterium that causes pneumonia, meningitis (infection in the lining around the brain), and sepsis (infection of the bloodstream). Infections can be life-threatening and may require hospitalization. Researchers are now studying vaccines intended to prevent pneumococcal disease.
