(KCAA) to conduct clinical trials for investigational products intended to help treat allergies, asthma, immunologic diseases, and related conditions. The area’s premiere provider of allergy and asthma care, the site is easily accessible to thousands of patients, including those established with the practice. KCAA has served the community since 1979, and began conducting clinical trials with Meridian Clinical Research in 2022, shortly before being acquired by Velocity.
All trials conducted at the site are performed in accordance with ICH and FDA guidelines, and in compliance with GCP. The Kansas City team is committed to being a resource for study participants, to providing the highest quality of patient care with compassion and kindness, and to advancing medicine through research.

Principal Investigator
Board certified in internal medicine and allergy, asthma, and immunology, Derrick R. Ward, MD received his medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He completed an internal medicine residency at John’s Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis and an allergy/immunology fellowship at Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City. Dr. Ward is a member of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the Joint Council of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Greater Kansas City Allergy Society, and a fellow of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. -
Principal Investigator
James B. Sterner, MD joined KCAA in 2014. Board certified in internal medicine and allergy as well as asthma and immunology, Dr. Sterner received his medical degree from University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. He also completed an internal medicine residency at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas and an allergy and immunology fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Sterner is also a member of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. -
Principal Investigator
William J. Lavery, MD, PhD is a board-certified pediatrician with fellowship training in adult and pediatric allergy, asthma and immunodeficiency. Dr. Lavery is also board-eligible in allergy and immunology. He received his medical degree from University of Texas School of Medicine and completed a pediatrics residency at University of Colorado/Children’s Hospital Colorado as well as an allergy and immunology fellowship at University of Cincinnati/Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Lavery is a member of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
