The Need for Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Vaccine Research
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common infectious cause of birth defects in the U.S. Congenital CMV does not usually cause illness or symptoms in babies, but about 1 out of 5 babies with congenital CMV will experience symptoms or long-term health problems. CMV infection in utero can seriously impact development of a fetus, resulting in hearing loss, developmental and motor delay, vision loss, microcephaly (small head), or seizures. When a pregnant woman is infected with CMV during pregnancy, the virus van pass through the placenta and infect the baby during pregnancy.
There are currently no approved CMV vaccines. However, some promising CMV vaccine candidates are in clinical trials. A safe and effective vaccine could reduce the number of birth defects in newborns and mono hospitalizations by preventing a significant number of infections.
Velocity has supported vaccine studies for more than a decade, and frequently conducts CMV vaccine studies for children, adults, and even pregnant women.
How to Participate in a CMV Vaccine Trial
Velocity has research sites nationwide that are conducting clinical trials in a wide range of therapeutic areas. New studies are added every week. You can help fight CMV by joining a clinical trial at Velocity.
