Checklist: Questions to Ask Before Joining a Clinical Trial

Participating in a clinical trial is an important decision, and you should be comfortable with your decision. Each study is different, but the informed consent process ensures you understand what will happen. You’ll learn about the product being studied, your role in the trial, potential side effects, and the visits required.

You can ask the following questions to make a more informed decision about joining.

  • What is the goal of this study?
  • How will the medicine, medical device, or test be given to me?
  • How many times will I need to visit the clinic?
  • Will I be paid for my time and travel, or for participating in this study?
  • Is insurance required to join this study?
  • If the treatment works for my condition, can I continue taking it after the study?
  • Will I receive any exams, tests, or follow-up care?
  • Who is the doctor and/or staff running this study?
  • How is my privacy protected throughout the study?
  • Will the study affect my current treatment plan or daily life?

After you fully understand your role in the study, you may sign an informed consent form. You may withdraw your consent at any time.
